Make this year - the whole year - your healthiest yet
With the arrival of the new year, many of us are determined to eat healthier (and better!) in 2010…and better eating habits should be a whole year’s resolution, not just a New Year’s resolution. Keep in mind living a healthier life starts with a healthy balanced diet as well as enjoying exercise and activities that suit your lifestyle.
Make physical activity an enjoyable part of your daily life
- Move more every day: take the stairs, walk a little bit further in the parking lot, get off the bus early or shovel the driveway – all great ways to burn calories and strengthen muscles
- Plan active family outings such as walks, hikes and cross-country skiing. Or join a play group or swimming class with your toddler or child.
- Treat yourself to 10 minutes-a-day, just for yourself. It could be a simple ‘me-time’ favourite, such as walking, yoga, reading, talking to a friend or soaking in the tub.
Have fun, laugh out loud, feel good about yourself... plus
- Eat breakfast every day. You’ll be less likely to over-eat, and you’ll have more energy later.
- Enjoy plenty of the vegetables and whole fruits and stick to whole grains and healthy fats. Watch your portions and go meatless once or twice a week with legumes & beans as a substitute.
- Fast eaters usually complete a meal in ten minutes while slow eaters take 2-3 times longer and consume 70 to100 calories less! Take time to enjoy that healthy plate of food.
Read the 'Nutrition Facts' label to choose 'whole grains' more often
- Nutrition information on food labels can support you in making informed food choices. They provide product specific information on the
Nutrition Facts Table (NFT),
the ingredient list, nutrient content and/or health claims plus allergen statements.

- For example, you’ll notice that whole grains contain more vitamins, minerals,
protein, and fibre than white processed grain foods. The properties of whole grains
also have stabilizing influences on blood sugar levels.
- Canada's Food Guide recommends to make at least half of your grain products whole grain each day. To add more whole grains to your day, bake with whole wheat flour. More about the benefits of
