Protect yourself from the sun—inside and out.
When it comes to protecting your skin from sunburn, wrinkles and possible cancers later in life, you already know how important it is to pour on the sunscreen in the summer.
But did you know that certain foods provide excellent natural protection from the harmful rays of the sun?
Take a look at these delicious ways to keep your skin sun healthy all summer long:
- Foods rich in antioxidants attack free radicals—or loose oxygen molecules that speed up skin aging and can trigger cancer. Foods like whole grains, nuts, seeds, green and black tea, dark chocolate, tomatoes, broccoli, and berries help repair sun-damaged cells—and keep you looking younger!
- Omega 3 fatty acids prolong the time it takes skin to burn and help reduce your risk of melanoma. Be sure to include foods like salmon, trout, sardines, walnuts, and flax seed in your diet for an extra boost of sun protection.
- Lycopene not only gives many fruits and vegetables their reddish colour, it also increases the skin’s ability to fight damaging radiation from the sun. Munch on lycopene-rich foods like tomatoes (especially cooked), watermelon, pink grapefruit, carrots, and red bell peppers to help protect from sunburn. Why not try our Mediterranean Sampler canapés with red-pepper relish as a delicious way to enjoy a little lycopene!
- Remember to drink plenty of fluids, which will keep you hydrated—increasing your skin’s ability to protect itself from the harmful effects of the environment. Sip water, juice, milk, soups, and more throughout the day and arm your skin with the defenses it needs against the sun.
Sun-healthy foods don’t replace sunscreen, so be sure to apply SPF15 or higher when you’re out in the summer sun. Then stock up on foods that will make you feel good from the inside out!
