Trans Fat
The nutrient content claim is no trans fat or trans fat free. This means that all Dare Products containing the no trans fat or trans fat free claim symbol have met the criteria set out by Health Canada. For example, Dare Simple Pleasure Chocolate Thins have 0 grams of trans fats and 2 grams of saturated fat per 4 cookies (28 grams) portion.
There are different types of fats in foods including saturated, unsaturated and trans fats. Choosing the right amount and types of fats can lower your risk of developing certain diseases such as heart disease. Jane Dummer, Registered Dietitian agrees, the research shows a diet high in saturated and trans fat can lead to an increase in your total and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL –C) levels, raising your risk for heart disease. Trans fats until recently were found in high amounts in processed foods containing partially hydrogenated oils and shortenings. Due to the negative health effects and mandatory package labelling of trans fat, the food supply has changed with manufacturers removing or reducing use of trans fats in their products.
Helpful Tips
Trans fats are not an essential part of the diet. Jane Dummer, Registered Dietitian advises it is important to reduce or eliminate processed food products containing large amounts of trans fat. Jane Dummer, Registered Dietitian recommends for good health, to limit the amount of saturated and trans fat in your day. Check the Nutrition Facts Table and choose foods that are lower in saturated and trans fat. Choose foods that contain monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fat such as sunflower, canola and soybean oils found in many Dare products.

Iron
The nutrient content claim is a source of iron. This means that all Dare Products containing the source of iron claim symbol have met the criteria set out by Health Canada. For example, Bear Paws soft cookies contain 10% of the recommended Daily Value (DV) of iron per 2 cookies (50 g) portion.
Iron helps carry oxygen to all parts of your body to fuel daily activities. Iron is a factor in building red blood cells. When we don’t get enough iron, we can become fatigued, tired and irritable. Jane Dummer, Registered Dietitian, adds that without enough iron in your body, you may have trouble concentrating. The amount of iron we need depends on your gender, age and stage of life. To find the DRI (Dietary Reference Intakes are a comprehensive set of nutrient reference values for healthy populations that can be used for assessing and planning diets) for iron, click on this link to the Health Canada website.
Helpful Tips
The body doesn’t absorb the iron in plant foods (non heme iron) as well as the iron in meat (heme iron) and other animal foods. You can help boost iron absorption from plant sources when you eat them with a vitamin C source such as oranges, grapefruit, strawberries, tomatoes or red peppers. Avoid drinking excess tea and coffee with iron containing foods. Tea and coffee contain polyphenols, which lower the amount of non-heme iron your body can absorb.
Menu Planning Ideas
Pack Dare Bear Paws soft cookies for your morning break and in the kid’s lunch for a homestyle, tasty option with a source of iron. Try Grissol Crispy Baguettes topped with a tomato rich salsa or citrus fruit chutney for a source of iron along with some vitamin C to assist in the absorption of the iron.
