Dare Foods Limited is this year’s recipient of the Susan Daglish Award for Food Manufacturing. This award is a tribute to Susan’s 30 years advocating on behalf of those who live with allergies and anaphylaxis. Her efforts to improve ingredient listings and allergen safe manufacturing practices are an inspiration to us all. Dare Foods Limited received this award for developing a comprehensive Allergen Management Policy. Dare Foods takes pride in listening to and focusing on the needs of consumers. They know that customers are becoming increasingly concerned with foods that can cause severe allergic reactions. In light of this they now produce most products in dedicated facilities.

Just recently, all Dare bakery and candy plants have been designated as nut free / peanut free facilities. As a result, all packaging is being updated to include the statement, "manufactured in a nut free / peanut free facility".

To make this happen, Dare has implemented a very stringent allergen management process which includes:

  • moving the manufacture of all products containing nuts/peanuts to outside facilities;
  • putting equipment through a regular allergen cleaning procedure;
  • working with key suppliers to ensure stringent allergen management programs are in place and,
  • providing staff training on allergen management policies, which include the restriction of nut/peanut products being brought into the plants for personal consumption.

Dare also purchases a small number of products from outside manufacturing facilities. Their policy is to declare all allergens on the package, with the ingredient list. They also place a "May contain" warning where there is a risk. Their consumer response advises to read the label, every time.
