Director of Engineering and Network Optimization

Full-Time + Cambridge, ON

Dare Foods Limited, a leading Canadian manufacturer and distributor of quality biscuits, crackers, fine breads, confectionery products, and portable snacks, is seeking motivated and energetic individuals to join our team.

Director of Engineering and Network Optimization

Reporting to the VP Integrated Supply Chain, the Director of Engineering and Network Optimization will develop and manage the capital investment program (budgeting, prioritizing, project planning, and executing) for our network of 9 facilities in North America. This role will also be responsible for working with our manufacturing, supply chain, R&D and business partners to develop and implement our manufacturing network strategy. This includes optimization of our current network as well as future acquisitions, positioning all our facilities for long term growth and efficiency.

Due to the size and culture of the organization, this leader will have the opportunity to work strategically (building long term vision and presenting to our President and senior leadership team), but will also need to spend time in the details of projects and production (managing timely and efficient execution, troubleshooting issues on the floor, understanding the details of our facilities, projects and people).

The role will be based at our head office in Cambridge Ontario, under our flexible remote model which will involve a responsible mix of head office presence, plant visits, and work-from-home.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Capital Budget Ownership
    • Develop and manage our annual company wide capital budget and execution plan
    • Lead capital budget allocation and approval process with our 9 facilities
    • Identify capital projects to improve manufacturing operations to meet quality, innovation, productivity, or capacity objectives
    • Maintain an awareness of developments in the field of utility, bakery and candy processes and packaging technology
  • Capital Project Management
    • Provide expertise in executing all aspects of capital projects
    • Develop and ensure Dare engineering standards are in-place
    • Lead and complete conceptual design, scoping, detail design, tendering, cost and benefit estimating, installation and testing duties as related to Capital Projects
  • Manufacturing Network Strategy
    • Work with cross functional leaders in manufacturing, supply chain, R&D, marketing and finance to build a long-term strategic vision to optimize capacity, utilization and cost in our manufacturing network
    • Lead the integration of capacity from future integrations into our existing network
    • Constantly re-assess our network capacity utilization for optimization opportunities
  • Team Development
    • Create and develop a productive, high-functioning and engaged team that supports the company culture, mission and values
    • Provide purpose, context, and direction to team members along with coaching and mentoring towards management and leadership development.
    • Support and develop team members in achieving their individual goals as well as focus on individual and company metrics and deliverables
    • Communicates effectively throughout the organization, ensuring alignment of work and deliverables

What You'll Bring: 

  • Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
  • Qualified engineer certification
  • Project Management experience
  • Engineering experience with mechanical processes and packaging systems preferably within the food industry
  • Budgeting and cost management experience
  • Comfortable managing ambiguity and change
